Animal Success Stories
blue1Blue was an owner surrender that was taken in by the Macon County Humane Society in September of 2006.
His previous owned suspected that Blue had mange and rather than seeking the advise of a Veterinarian, he attempted a "Home Remedy".
The owner poured hot motor oil onto the area of suspected mange and the resulting burn was horriffic and as you might imagine, very painful for Blue.
The problem with this "remedy" is, Skin exposure to motor oil can cause rashes and skin destruction in severe cases. The hydrocarbons can be absorbed through the skin and cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. If motor oil is licked off the coat, the animal could start vomiting and this can lead to aspiration of motor oil into the lungs and pneumonia. Kidney and liver damage can result from motor oil dipping. THIS "TREATMENT" CAN KILL YOUR PET-PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!

Blue in his new home. After word of Blue's plight became public, a family in Florida heard of his story and determined that they would step forward and give Blue a new home. After a three hour drive, they arrived in Tuskegee, met with Blue and completed the adoption process.
Blue has a new home where he is the center of attention and great prospects for a long and happy life with his new family.
It has been said that while you can't save every animal in the world, you can make the world of difference for one animal.
Blue is a great example of what that difference can be and with your support, the Macon County Humane Society can provide more happy endings for more animals like him.

ChiltonChilton:It was a beautiful sunny day in April when I left to go to the next small town to do a little shopping on my lunch break.  I went into our local Wal-Mart
and bought a few items and as I was coming out I noticed a black Labrador retriever anxiously walking from one set of doors to the other.  Each time the doors would open and someone would walk out and each time she would look up as if to see if she recognized them.  I knew it was a she because her breasts were hanging low enough to be exposed through her fur.  She was older with a graying snout.  Her eyes had a friendly sparkle that told me I could not leave this dog to face obvious trouble.

After talking with a Wal-Mart employee I learned that people dumped dogs off there all the time. The humane shelter was practically right across the street so I took her there.  Three weeks later the shelter called and no one had inquired.  I went and got her and went straight to the veterinarian’s hospital.   I named her, Chilton, and was told she had heartworms and had not been spayed.  I had a feeling she had been allowed to have puppies every year.

After having her spayed and cured of the heartworms, my husband and I took her home to meet our other two Labs.  She was a street wise dog and obviously had had a tough life.  She was the boss.  She made the other two dogs walk the line but always just tried her hardest to please us.  She constantly licked our hands and any part of our bodies as if to say

“thank you.”   She was a total joy to be around and somehow looking at her always reminded us of just how very fortunate we all were.

Chilton stayed with us for four-and-a-half years before suffering renal failure.  We did all we could but had to have her put to sleep last June.  Even just before the end she looked up at us with that same sparkle in her eyes.  Our lives were so touched by this deserted street wise dog. We miss her now and always will.

Puffy
Puffy

Puffy is now named Panda and lives in Boston, Massachusetts. I adopted Panda from your shelter and she is a very sweet, affectionate, kind dog and totally awesome. She has been a wonderful new addition to our family and we love her. Her story is particularly touching, because she was found in a sinkhole and rescued by the police/fire department (see Puffy/Panda's story under the News section of this website). We heard her story and saw her photos and just had to help in some way, and really wanted to adopt her if we could. Karin Roth worked with us through the adoption process although it was tougher as we were adopting from Massachusetts. The whole experience with your shelter was absolutely wonderful. My sister-in-law loved Panda so much that she also adopted Maddie, who is a possible sibling of Panda’s because they were born around the same time and look very much alike and have similar personalities. I attached a bunch of pictures…. Her puppy pictures from your shelter, photos of her first day with her new family, and some xmas photos, photos of her having fun in the snow… etc. Best regards, Panda, Bear & Toby (our furry ‘kids’!) Barlow
Barlow

Barlow appeared on a neighbor’s doorstep in a small town in Alabama November 15, 2007, clearly begging for help. Underweight and submissive, he had multiple open wounds on his face and legs and a large lump under his jaw. It looked like he’d been used for bait in a dogfight. Macon County Humane Society volunteer, Sue-Ellen Brown, immediately brought the 10 month old mix to her veterinarian where he was tested, examined, de-wormed and given initial vaccinations. His wounds were cleaned and dressed and he was sent home with Sue-Ellen with instructions for his continued daily care. There were also signs that he may have had an early bout of distemper. A few weeks later, Barlow was neutered and his wounds stitched closed. He was transferred to a second foster home, a veterinarian, so she could continue the work of helping Barlow’s wounds heal as best as possible. In both foster homes, Barlow was excellent with other dogs, loved sleeping on the couch and in his crate and playing with toys. It appears that Barlow may be a slow learner as evidenced by some of his behaviors, but his personality endeared him to his foster homes and all who met him. Despite their efforts at finding Barlow a home, no one responded. They called Popcorn Park. Barlow arrived at the end of January. He was brought back from a life of terrible suffering and pain, only wanting to be someone’s sweetheart and couch potato. Barlow was finally adopted into a great home in NJ!! Hattie
Hattie

Hattie was found running in the street in Hurtsboro, AL. The man that had owned their mother had died. Hattie and all her siblings were infested with lice and other parasites. After weeks of treatments, Hattie was shipped to Boston where she lives a happy life with her new family! Dear Sue & Macon County Family, I have traveled such a long way to meet my new family, but it was worth it! As you can see, I am doing great. While I am not fully a city gal yet, I am certainly adjusting very quickly. My new owners love me to death, but don’t worry, they are not spoiling me. I hope you are all doing well and don’t miss me too much. Thank you for all your support to help me become the healthy, loveable, well-socialized pup I am! Love, Maddie (formerly “Hattie”)
