Last May, we found 8 puppies no more than a day old (probably more like a few hours) abandoned at our church. We took them home. I called the shelter to see if they could take them, but they said since they were so young they would have to put them down because they didn't have the manpower or resources to raise them. My family and I said that just wasn't an option. So, I called friends and they fostered 4 of the puppies and we fostered 4. All eight puppies lived and thrived. My friends and I both kept one puppy each from the litter, and we placed the remaining six puppies in good homes. We asked all adoptee families to spay/neuter their dogs and see that they receive regular vet care, obedience training, and lots of love.We also told them that if the puppy did not work out for any reason, they could return the puppy to us for placement with another family.
I received a message last Tuesday from a couple who had adopted one of the female puppies (we called her Big Girl because she was the largest puppy in the litter) that they could no longer keep her and were going to put her down if I couldn't take her back by Thursday. I immediately went and picked Big Girl up and brought her to my vet's office. Although the people had good intentions and loved Big Girl, they could not give her much attention after they had a new baby last fall, and she had spent significant time in a crate or tied to a post in the yard for the past 7 months or so...very sad.She had had only had one set of shots, no flea medicine or heartworm prevention, not been spayed, and had not learned basic manners including how to walk on a leash.
Big Girl was spayed this week, is now current on her shots, has had a bath and nail trim, and is negative for heartworms. I have spent some time with her the last few days and she seems to have the same temperament as the rest of her siblings: high energy but very sweet and smart . . .and in need of basic obedience training! I would take her home with me and keep her or at least foster her in a heartbeat, but I live in a garden home with NO yard and 2 dogs and a cat, so I just don't think it would be fair for her or the other dogs.
I think Big Girl really needs more individualized attention. She deserves a family and someone with a big heart to just love her. I don't want to interfere with your work with the shelters, but if you or someone you know could at least foster her and work with her some while we continue to find her a permanent home, I would so appreciate it. I would pay for all her vet care, food, and flea and heartworm medicine. I'm attaching some pictures I have of her. She is a shepherd mix of some kind we think. She's 53 lbs and turned 9 months old Wednesday (based on when we think they were born based on when their eyes opened...it's all a guesstimate!) Anything you can do to help us find her a home would be greatly appreciated.
